Come to Prayer Meeting!!  Update:  Prayer Meetings  -- the first Wednesday night of each month.
As a church body, we have just finished studying the Holy Spirit, & what the role of the Spirit should be in our church & in our lives.  Jim Cymbala, the author of When God's Spirit Moves, says "The power of the Holy Spirit comes when people pray."
We have an opportunity now to put this into practice corporately at our monthly prayer meetings on Wednesday nights @ 7PM here @ Liberty Street.
Let us seek together His will for us, His healing, His hope, & His power.  As Cymbala encouraged us, "God's not dead; he's still alive.  And what he's done through the centuries when people have prayed, he can still do today.  Let's ask the Holy Spirit to come & grant us a new spirit in our churches, in our small   groups, & in our individual lives."  "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people..." Acts 2:17  "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us..."  Romans 8:26

"LIVE" Worship - If you have unchurched friends or relatives, please invite them to our brand new worship service that started Saturday, October 13th @ 6PM.  Nursery will be provided & we hope to have Sonshine Club.

Youth News from Pastor Jonathan - December 2012

We just returned from the annual State Youth Convention, THIRST, this past Sunday! We had such a
great time of fun and fellowship together! I never get tired of spending time with our youth, and activities
like this really give us the opportunity to share quality time together. I would like to say thank you to the
congregation for giving us all the opportunity to attend these functions, the Lord is working through our
teens; he has big plans for them! Please continue to pray for them daily!

Rest of the Year Events:

On November 30th we will be collecting toys at Clarion University for some of the less fortunate children
in the area. It will be before/during the WOF Christmas simulcast. Youth need to be there at
6:00 to help load toys into the box truck.

December 14: 7:00 -9:00pm
We are going to meet at the church at 7:00pm. Some other youth from the area will be meeting with
us to wrap the toys collected during the Toy drive. We will wrap all the toys starting at 7:00 and
then have a pizza party afterwards. Following the pizza party we will have a gift exchange and
some games.

December 15: Toby Mac concert
PLANS: We plan to leave the church on Saturday, December 15th at 1:00 PM. We are going to stop and allow the youth to shop and hang out at the Pittsburgh Mills from 2:00 PM until 4:00 PM. We will then eat dinner in the food courts around 4:00 PM and then head to the Consol Energy Center in downtown Pittsburgh for the concert. The youth will need to bring money for dinner, any shopping they want to do and/or concert souvenirs.

THANK YOU!!

I would like to express my thanks to all of you. Blair, Isabella, Easton and I are extremely blessed to have
been called to minister here in Clarion! I believe God is accomplishing great things here and it’s such a humbling experience to see His kingdom expanding because of the love all of you have for him! Seeing our youth grow in Christ is one of the greatest things I have the opportunity to witness! My family and I will continue to pray for God’s protection, guidance, and direction for each of your families as we approach and move through the holiday season! May God bless each of you as much as He has blessed us!

Pastor Bruce's Message - December 2012

Dear Friends,
I am completely overwhelmed at how fast the Holidays have approached us. It seems to come
faster every year, if that is possible! I noticed that there are many folks that have been putting
something on Facebook every day during the month of November that they are thankful for. I
know I am a little late, but I want to share with you some of the things I am thankful for in
my life and the life that God has given me. (This in no way means that we don’t have challenges
in life or that every day is problem free), but for now we want to focus on the positive.
First of all, I am so glad that I am surrendered to the Lord Jesus Christ! I am blessed to be a
child of the King and to be called by Him to pastor the Liberty Street Church of God. This is
an awesome experience and you folks are a great blessing to my family and me. We want to
thank you all for the works of encouragement and also the gifts for Pastor Appreciation. We do
not deserve it, but we are so grateful for all of you and your generosity.
Recently my last aunt passed away. I had eight aunts and uncles on my Mother’s side and only
on Aunt and Uncle on my Dad’s side of the family. My Mother, who is 91 years old, is the
only one of her siblings that is left. During and after this last funeral that I had the honor of
conducting, I am profoundly aware that the generation before me is just about gone and it is a
little unnerving. These are the folks we have looked up to all of our lives and many of them
served as a great example to us. By the grace of God, however, we still have the memories that
will go with us throughout our lives.
This last funeral and family reunion (I say that tongue in cheek because it seems that is the
only time all the cousins get together) has made me appreciate so much more the importance
of relationships and family. Some of my cousins and I, along with my brother and sister were
very close growing up, and even though many of us have lost touch, we seemed to be able to
pick up where we left off.
I want to also express my thankfulness to God for my wife and children and grandchildren. I
can’t imagine where I would have wound up in this life if Judy and I had not gotten together.
It took me many years and struggles to realize that, and today I love her more than ever!
Our children are such a blessing and to watch them grow into adulthood is awesome. Judy and
I love them and their spouses with all of our heart.
Nick and Tiffany are doing well in ministry and are starting into the process of adopting a
child. They need our prayers as they are working through this process and we pray that God
will open the right doors for them.
Josh is the Worship Pastor at the Church of God in Brookville, PA. He is doing a great job
there and he is also in the process of recording a DVD in a studio in Pittsburgh. He does all
the singing of the different parts and also plays all the instruments for the recording.
Blair and her husband Jonathan are doing well with their two little ones. Isabella is two, and
Easton is three months old. We are so glad they are working here at Liberty Street alongside of
us. Jonathan is our Associate and Youth Pastor and Blair works with him and also heads up
our Women’s Ministry. They are both working on the Ordination.
Jessica has been doing well, she is a LPN and she is working in a Golden Living facility in
Murrysville, She is home every weekend and she has plans to go on a medical mission trip to
the Dominican Republic in January.
Sam is going to school in Pittsburgh to be a lineman for a power company. He also cuts trees
and is in the License and Ordination Process to ultimately go into the ministry. His girlfriend
Karla earned her Bachelor’s Degree (in three years) and is planning to go next fall to be a
physician’s assistant.
Caleb is our baby and is now 15 years old. He loves the Lord and he is an all-around boy, playing sports and loves the outdoors and hunting and fishing. He is growing into a young man.
I don’t very often talk about my family, but I never want to take them for granted nor do I want
to not recognize the blessings of God in my life through Judy and the kids. God has been faithful
to us and He has always provided for our needs and He has blessed us in pastoral ministry
beyond words.
Finally I want to recognize the blessing of friends. We have some great friends and we are
profoundly thankful for them.
To the Liberty Street Church of God, we love you and are honored to serve you. I know all of
you can share your blessings and the things you are thankful for, please do so, take some time
to appreciate the finer things in life that God has given us. Sometimes the finer things in life
are not the most expensive things, nor are they based on wealth and materialism, they are
based on our relationship with the Lord and the relationships we have one with another.
(Psalm 69:30 NIV) I will praise God's name in song and glorify him with thanksgiving.
(Phil 4:6-7 NIV) Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with
thanksgiving, present your requests to God. {7} And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Liberty Street Church of God Family, thank you for the growth that is happening both in numbers and in your lives. I am so thrilled to see how much you all love God’s church and love people. I’m thankful that you have a heart for the lost and that so many of you are great ambassadors for the work of the Kingdom. God will always honor your heart for people and that is why He is moving in our midst.
Thank you for loving the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength.
God Bless You All, Pastor Bruce

Dear Friend of AAA:

Back in the day, actually way back in the day, I really enjoyed riding roller coasters. I didn't shrink back and looked forward to the ride, knowing I would scream my lungs out the whole time. Today, not so much, I very carefully select the one and only roller coaster I will ride on a given day. I look for a mild one that isn't near the thrill or risk that I was game for in the past. Maybe I am wiser now and that is why this type of risk is not near as attractive or maybe I've ridden one too many roller coasters through life experiences that have left an indelible mark.

A little over two months ago your financial investment helped AAA Life Services ride a roller coaster of sorts regarding a young woman that came to our office for services. This ride began with a phone call late in the day. Connie was the first to speak with her and then asked that I take over to navigate the nature of some of her questions. Our desire is to have anyone with lots of questions and needs that we believe we can address, come into the office. However, in this case she ruled the invitation out, because she lived 30 minutes away.

The following day she called again and this time Hilary answered. She was pretty hysterical after taking two pregnancy tests and they were both positive. Hilary very reassuringly suggested that she take a deep breath and try to calm down. Once again, listening and learning from her what her greatest concerns were; another invitation was offered. This time she agreed.

As she and I talked in the counseling room, I began to hear all the reasons why having a baby at this time was not possible. With each reason, I countered with a reason that this could work. At some point there was a shift in our conversation and questions started coming that pertained to pregnancy: what do you eat, what should you do or not do? Wow, I started to enjoy the ride at this point. Eventually, I asked if I could give her one of the little baby models that we have and she seemed excited. I took another step and asked if she would be open to a few baby items, and again the answer was, "Yes".

The baby items were wrapped in a "baby bundle". These were given to us by a group of pre-school mothers and they are packed with baby items, books, and journals. With each item her excitement increased and then she asked if she was allowed to be excited. When she left she was flying high and so were we. Connie, Hilary, and I had all talked to her at some point and heard the impossible state of this pregnancy. Now this ride is on an upswing and looking good!

Unfortunately, the next day the coaster came crashing down and the possibilities for this child to live were bleak. The communication was more of the same as she said it could never work and I'm saying it could.  When the call ended the ride seemed to come to a screeching halt ... not coasting to a pleasant stop.

Then a month later the ride started all over again with an out of the blue phone call. There was joy back in her voice. We've decided to keep the baby was what she said. Then she went on to tell me the day before the abortion was scheduled her boyfriend came home and told her to cancel the appointment. As they talked the conclusion was that they could make it work.

Dear Friends,

We have had lots of activities going on here at the Liberty Street Church of God the last
several months. You have been challenged and so have I. However, through the eyes of
God and His direction that is what He expects of those that call themselves Christians.
Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to
you as well.” (Mat 6:33 NIV) Out of all the activities in our lives, the family, the occupation,
the business you own, all of your friends and your social life, can you and I say that we
really seek out the Kingdom of God first?

On the second night of the Reformation Renewal Rally our Caleb was running the sound
system and the computer for the power point. After the first service he was ready to go
home. Judy and I persuaded him to stay and do the second service. (You can probably
guess how we persuaded him!) After the service when we were taking the speakers out
for dinner he went along with us and I told him how much I appreciated what he did for
us and we told him that he really stepped in when we needed him. The POINT? I hope
this was a life lesson for him to see the need to seek first the Kingdom. Neither Judy nor
I said it in those terms; however, we hope that he saw that he fulfilled a need and that
God was pleased with him, as were his Mom and Dad. He sacrificed self to please God.

If human beings could just get over “SELF” I think there would be a more powerful and
effective witness of God’s church in the world. I would question in our day and in our society
if it is even possible to get beyond “SELF” and the desires of “SELF.” Jesus was
critical of the Pharisees with regard to their self-indulgence and warned them saying,
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You clean the outside of the cup and
dish, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. (Mat 23:25 NIV) There is no place in
the Christian’s life for these attributes. The Apostle Paul said that when we get saved,
“For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away
with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin-- {7} because anyone who has died has been freed.

(Rom 6:6-7 NIV) The Scripture also teaches that one of the characteristics of love is selflessness.
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. {5} It is not rude, it is not
self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. {6} Love does not delight in evil but rejoices
with the truth. {7} It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. {8} Love never
fails…...” (1 Cor 13:4-8 NIV)

We are taught in Scripture that the “NEW-SELF” is different than the old. “You were
taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its
deceitful desires; {23} to be made new in the attitude of your minds; {24} and to put on the new self,
created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.” (Eph 4:22-24 NIV) The “NEW-SELF” is
to be like God in righteousness and holiness. It only stands to reason that if we have the
“NEW-SELF” we will be seeking first the Kingdom.

I would encourage us that if we want to live a life of fulfillment, peace and contentment,
it will only come through a relationship with Jesus Christ that will result in crucifying
SELF. Jesus said, “Then he said to them all: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself
and take up his cross daily and follow me.” (Luke 9:23 NIV)

God Bless you all,
Pastor Bruce
