November 18 - 24 Operation Shoebox Collection Week
Dear Church Family,
Once again, it’s “Shoebox Packing Time”!  Christmas is a giving time of the year.  The greatest gift ever given was God sending His Son Jesus to us here on earth.  Receiving Him as our Savior, it’s our greatest desire to share His love to those who haven’t heard this Good News yet.
Shoes often no longer come home from a store in boxes, but plastic bags.  No problem!  Cardboard shoeboxes are available at the church, already decorated in red & green.
Our church is a collection site for other churches in the area to bring their shoeboxes.  We carton them for their trip to Charlotte,NC.  There they are inspected and a booklet of Jesus is inserted in each shoebox.  They are sent to over 130 world-wide countries by way of airplane, helicopter, canoe, motorcycle, oxcart, elephant, donkey, & etc.
Franklin Graham started Operation Christmas Child under the ministry of Samaritan Purse in 1993.  In those 20 years, over 100 million deprived and needy boys and girls have received a shoebox with the “love of Jesus” inside the box.  Some were orphans, some disabled, some from war-torn lands, some lived in city dumps, some eat only what they can find. (So hard for us to imagine!) But to many, the shoebox made a difference in their lives.  Not just are these children affected by Jesus’ love, but their families too. (The Jesus booklets are printed in their own language.)
Join us!  Who knows?  Maybe someday in Heaven, we’ll get to meet someone who received our shoebox we packed and prayed over!!
In Jesus’ love, John & Beth Henry & Crew

The Homebuilder's Sunday School Class invites You...
All parents are welcome to join us for this new study "Discipling Parents" beginning Sun., Sept. 8 at 9 a.m.  The Homebuilders class meets in the  fellowship hall across from the restrooms.  Our most important responsibility as parents is leading our kids to the Lord.  Yet, oftentimes parents feel ill-equipped for the task.  Perhaps we didn’t have parents who discipled us.  Or maybe we don’t feel that we have a firm understanding of the  Scriptures.  Or we may feel we’re too busy to do it.  Yet,  here’s no investment that pays more dividends than teaching our kids to know and love Jesus Christ.  This fall, the Homebuilders class will be studying the Word, with the focus of guiding parents in how to teach their children the Word.  With weekly assignments from the book of Matthew, we will embark together on a quest to make the Word of God come alive in our homes.
Beth Henry & the Bible Study Sunday School Class Invites You...
Psalm 119:105 “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path”.  For that to be, we must know what is in God’s Word.  If you are not already in a Sunday School class, the Bible Study Class invites you to ours.  We meet in the prayer room, which is behind the sanctuary platform and beside the church library.  On Sunday, September 8th @    9 am, we will begin a new study of the New Testament book of Galatians.   We’d be glad to have  you join us!
SonShine Club --- We are asking that anyone willing to come out of retirement (teaching Sonshine Club) or looking for a new ministry (teaching Sonshine Club) contact Hayley Jeannerat @ 764-5390 or the church office 226-8672.  We can use more teachers and helpers.  What a blessing to see children learn of our wonderful Savior.

Parents: Do you have some "gently used " kid's clothing taking up space in closets or drawers that your children have out grown? The Baker Street Church of God in Rimersburg offers a Kid's Closet ministry where families in need are able to receive free clothes for their children. This ministry is held every other month with the next Kid's Closet to be held in March. They are especially in need of sizes infant to children's size 12. Please, consider this ministry and .bring any children's clothes donations to church by March 3rd. Your donations will be greatly appreciated.

Attention: Teachers, Nursery Workers & Volunteers -  If you have received your Child Abuse Clearance in the mail, please bring it to the church office ASAP.

We are in need of additional:

1) Nursery Workers - We are so blessed with lots of babies that we need more adult help.  Please see Michelle Aites if you are interested in helping w/Sunday School Nursery or Worship Nursery.

2) SonShine Club Workers - We are being blessed with more children in our Sonshine Club Ministry!  If you would llike to spend som time with a bunch of great kids, please see Hayley Jeannerat or email her @ hayleydj@windstream.net.  There are 2 groups - Younger (3yr. - Kind.) & Older (1st - 3rd gr.).  Because of age, helpers are placed with the younger group.  No need to worry about preparing a lengthy lesson.  Hayley makes a 6 month rotation schedule & currently teachers are teaching every 5 - 6 wks., but if there were more volunteers you would teach less often.

3) Welcome Center Volunteers - Please see Tammy Lerch or call 226-9680 if you are interested.

Mission Trip to Jamaica 2014
It’s time to start planning for Jamaica!   If you would like an opportunity to serve God on the mission field and are ready for a life-changing adventure, we invite you on a one-week mission trip to Harmons, Jamaica.  We’re working with an organization called Won by One to Jamaica to plan a trip for our church August 10-17, 2014.  Anyone age 13 and over is welcome.
Harmons is a small mountain village of 3,000 people in south central Jamaica.  It’s an impoverished community with around 75% unemployment.  Quality medical treatment is lacking and money for basic needs is limited.  One practical objective of our trip will be to help alleviate some of the physical hardships the citizens of Harmons experience every day.
Our jobs there may include tasks such as:
*constructing houses
*carrying marl (basic ingredient for making concrete)
*helping at “Blessings In Store,” a second-hand store created by the Won by One ministry, now run by local Jamaicans
*repairing homes
*assisting school teachers
Now is the time to make a commitment to going on the trip.  If you are interested, please see Matt & Jenny Bates at the table in the church foyer.  A $100 per person deposit will be required to secure your spot.  Each team member must raise an additional $1,350 to cover trip expenses (airfare, ground transportation, meals/accommodations, etc.)  Passport not included.  The deposit will be due September 15.  If you have questions, contact Matt & Jenny Bates at 814-764-6056 or at - mrbates_2000@yahoo.com

Pastor's Message - November 2013

Dear Friends,

Fall is upon us and I am not liking the cold! However, I do like the fall of the year. As of the writing of this article, Judy and I made the trek to Benezette yesterday and spent the afternoon there hoping to see the elk, and we did see the elk. What a majestic animal and to think that they are basically in our own    backyard. It’s really a relaxing place to go.

We have a friend, Jenny Maze, from Sugar Grove, PA and almost every day she writes a devotional on Facebook. In fact, I look forward to reading the devotionals. She should really publish them.

I asked her for permission to put this on in our Church Newsletter and this is it:
There were no heated words. It was just a little discussion to get each other’s opinion. Denny and I were     discussing the words “obligation” and “commitment”. We didn’t open a dictionary or look up the words on line. We didn’t really care what the exact meaning of the words. We just wondered what each other’s interpretation of them was. Denny felt that the words meant the same thing. I, on the other hand thought that obligation meant that you “have to"  do it and commitment meant that you “get to"  do it. God’s love for us is beyond our realm of         comprehension. Check out this verse, Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
Whether we “have to” do something or we “get to” do something, God tells us in I Corinthians 16:14 “Do   everything in love.” The definitions of Obligation and Commitment; commitment is found in the definition of    obligation and obligation is found in the definition of commitment. To settle our little discussion…..it’s not about obligation or commitment, have to” or get to”, we should do all things in love!

As Pastor’s we think about and talk about commitment a lot, probably more than our people want to hear it.

When I think about all the work that needs done in the life of the Church and how much of it gets done by a relatively small group of people, it is both amazing and frustrating. Our most important task concerns people. All that we do with respect to ministry should be centered people. It is motivated by God’s love for us and that “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” A love that is probably beyond our      comprehension, but none the less, a love that God has for mankind.

Our motivation to minister to one another then, would be motivated by the love that God demonstrated through Christ. We indeed should do all things out of love. The Scripture says, 1Co 13:13 ESV “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.”

Are our motives pure? Does our labor for the Lord reflect our love for God and others? Do we do the work because of our commitment or out of obligation, or both? Is there a difference between obligation and commitment? These are questions that challenge us and keep us focused on God’s purposes.

Along with the thoughts I just mentioned, we are entering in to the season of the year where much is    expected of us with respect to giving. Gift giving, ministry giving, and the demands on each one of us to make sure that we do our part as the church body to be benevolent. I want to encourage you to help where you can and where you feel led to help. I know we all can’t do everything, but if each one does their part we can indeed make a difference in the lives of those who need it.

Also, the wheels are turning with respect to the Trinity Point project. The steel for the structure is ordered and in process, we will be seeing some things happening in the not too distant future. Please continue to be faithful in praying for this project and the leaders of our congregation as we move forward. Thank you for your faithfulness in giving and thank you for the commitment that you have as a result of God’s love for us. It is truly an honor to serve God and do His will.

God bless you,

Pastor

Come to Prayer Meeting!!
Prayer Meetings  --  the first Wednesday night of each month.
As a church body, we have just finished studying the Holy Spirit, & what the role of the Spirit should be in our church & in our lives.  Jim Cymbala, the author of When God's Spirit Moves, says "The power of the Holy Spirit comes when people pray."
We have an opportunity now to put this into practice corporately at our monthly prayer meetings on Wednesday nights @ 7PM here @ Liberty Street.
Let us seek together His will for us, His healing, His hope, & His power.  As Cymbala encouraged us, "God's not dead; he's still alive.  And what he's done through the centuries when people have prayed, he can still do today.  Let's ask the Holy Spirit to come & grant us a new spirit in our churches, in our small   groups, & in our individual lives."  "In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people..." Acts 2:17  "In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness.  We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us..."  Romans 8:26
